Among the multiple crises currently taking place on the European continent, another serious threat has been unfolding. Russia is actively seeking to harm and destabilize Germany. Taken together, Russian actions against Germany represent another example of hybrid warfare targeting the legitimacy of a European government.
The development of information technology has changed the nature of conflicts by creating an additional layer of complexity to traditional battle spaces. Nearly global access to the virtual environment has created numerous opportunities to conduct battles online affecting events in both the physical domain, such as computer systems, and in the cognitive domain of people’s attitudes and beliefs.
In 2014 the West was mesmerised by Russia’s ‘hybrid war’ in Crimea and east Ukraine. ‘Little green men’ in Crimea and disposable warlords in the Donbas served as proxies and cut-outs to disguise the invasion of Ukraine...
